The Benefits Of Electric Vehicles
An electric vehicle can be a great way for you, as a consumer, to save a lot of money on gas. However, there are many other reasons you should invest in an electric vehicle in the modern-day of technology.
Cheaper To Run
The cost of the electricity required to charge an EV is around 40% less than the cost to use petrol for a similar sized vehicle driving the same distance1. The cost will be lower if you charge your EV from your solar PV system or at free charging stations.
Safe to Drive
Electric cars undergo the same fitness and testing procedures test as other fuel-powered cars. An electric car is safer to use, given their lower center of gravity, which makes them much more stable on the road in case of a collision. In case an accident occurs, one can expect airbags to open up and electricity supply to cut from the battery. This can prevent you and other passengers in the car from serious injuries.
Charging At Home
You can charge your EV from a power point or buy dedicated Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment (EVSE) - note we use the more commonly used term of ‘charger’ throughout our web pages.
All EV’s come with a charging cable with a three-pin plug that can be plugged into any power point. The rate of charging will be determined by the amperage of the power point, which is usually 10A or 15A (~2.3 or 3.5kW), but will always be relatively slow. For example, a 40kWh Nissan leaf will be charged from low to full in around 24 hours1. A 100kWh Tesla Model S would take longer. But if your battery is rarely below half full, and you remember to charge overnight and/or while your solar PV system is operating, then this charging method could be fine for you most of the time. However, if you charge this way you won’t be able to access the cheaper economy electricity tariffs, as power points cannot be connected to an economy tariff. Time-of-Use tariffs can still be accessed. If you have a public fast-charging station close by, you could use that when you don’t have hours to wait to fill up your battery.

Cost of EV
EVs offer outstanding value over the long term and can be an excellent investment for drivers looking for a cheaper, more efficient way to get around.
Like traditional petrol and diesel vehicles, the cost of buying an electric car varies depending on make, model, features and type.
There is an electric vehicle to suit almost every budget.
Cheaper To Maintain
EV are designed to be as efficient as possible and there are generally 3 main components powering the vehicle; the on-board charger, inverter and motor.
There is far less wear and tear on the car and little stress on the motor, with fewer moving parts susceptible to damage.
This means you’ll rarely have to have your EV serviced and the running and repair costs are minimal.
Better For The Network
If EV charging is managed effectively, mainly outside peak electricity demand periods, it will help us to create a flatter electricity network demand profile over a typical 24-hour period. This will help us to:
- Better utilise the electricity network
- Help EV owners avoid higher-cost charging periods
- Help the entire electricity system work more efficiently
- Help support the integration of more small and large-scale renewable energy systems into the electricity grid.
Better For The Environment, Better For You
Better air quality will lead to less health problems and costs caused by air pollution. The biggest advantage of EV is its qualities to protect the natural environment. Electric cars are 100 percent eco-friendly as they run on electrically powered engines. It does not emit toxic gases or smoke in the environment as it runs on a clean energy source. By using EV you’ll be contributing to a healthy and green climate. EVs are also quieter than petrol/diesel cars, which means less noise pollution.
